Zuud in Mongolia : This winter 2009 - 2010, Mongolia is again experiencing an extremely harsh winter, the zuud, a huge catastrophy for Mongolian herders. Already 2.5 million cattle have been lost. Aid is now arriving from China and Russia, but unfortunately too late. The biggest problem will appear later this Spring and Summer, when the tragedy will have been forgotten by the media and when many of the nomads who will have lost their cattle will start to move to the cities. A new wave of rural exodus is to be expected.

A lot of people are asking us how they can help. Right now there's not much we can do as the urgent aid is taken care of by bigger organizations like the UN. Your help will be really useful later on in the Summer. Please send us an e-mail NOW if you want to help. We will be identifying nomads, or small local organizations, who will be able to help directly the nomads to remain on their land, for example by helping them buying some livestock. As soon as we have identified a valuable project, we'll send you an e-mail with a call to action and more details.

May 2007

In Mongolia, we try to source most of our material from rural areas. Still, we openend a workshop in one of the poorest area of the city together with Ariuna a fantastic lady dedicated to the poorest in her area. The goal is to offer a 3 months education in sewing. When the ladies finish their course, they get a sewing machine... and most probably a job! The first 3 just finished their course in May 2007 and will remain another month or two helping teaching the next 3. Benefits of the workshop help pay the teachers, as well as additional course for the community (felt making, language, ...) and a little kindergarden. Here are the first pictures in Uliastai:
