Our Mongolian yurts are mostly made of natural materials. There’s a big difference between authentic Mongolian yurts and their more modern North American cousins. They share the same name and a similar structure, but are two very different products.
A Mongolian yurt is a handmade product. The North American climate is often more humid than the Mongolian climate and therefore our yurts are specially adapted. We ensure the very best materials are sourced in Mongolia. Most parts of the solid wood structure are dried for an extensive period of time and subsequently carved and shaped by our manufacturer’s family. Our white felt (processed in Mongolia with 100% sheep wool) is more resistant to humidity than traditional countryside made felt. It is very dense and guarantees great insulation. The canvas is also specially selected to best resist Northern climates while offering breathing capabilities.
Although based on a millenary design, we strive to continuously improve upon our yurts, with respect and reverence for Mongolian tradition and culture, along with the needs of our customers. Still, it must be clear that these are hand made in Mongolia and that one cannot expect the exactitude and precision of an industrial product. This is also part of the beauty of these yurts. They are perfectly imperfect :)
Our yurts include the following:
– Solid door combined with a double French door style frame
– Centerdome, the basic toono comes with 3 vinyl coverings on the front half and a basic stove pipe opening. Option to upgrade the basic stove pipe opening with chimney flashing and bracket. Option to upgrade the vinyl with either a half or full acrylic finish.
– Two central posts, the bagaans (or 4 for yurts above 6-walls)
– Huns (roof rafters) hand painted with traditional motifs
– Cotton liner
– Lattice walls for the circumference of your yurt
– 100% sheep wool felt insulation layer; roof and walls
– Water-resistant decorated canvas (60% cotton, 40% Polyester)
– Insulated exterior top cover for the toono (the urgh)
– Decorative skirt (the rayavtch)
– Horsehair ropes
